Nursing may be the hottest job market available at the moment; however, it is also a very demanding – both physically and mentally – job to take on day after day. The physical demands of a certified nursing assistant would be to help lift or move patients who can not do this for themselves. In addition, there is cleaning of a patient, bathing and whenever they might not make it to the bathroom in time or need assistance using a bedpan. As people age, these things tend to become more prevalent and often times increase in severity. A nurse’s assistant should not have a weak stomach for these types of things.
Many people who are working in other jobs in a hospital, such as a receptionist or patient coordinator, may want to become a nursing assistant and to do so they should look into online CNA training courses. These online training programs will allow an individual to keep their current job and work through the course materials at their own pace. Once they have completed the training, the hospital they are working at may hire them on as a nursing assistant because they have been a loyal employee.
Then there are those people who may be working in other fields within the hospital who might also want to switch careers to a CNA and while they are working could also take courses to become a certified nursing assistant. Many certified nursing assistants need to update their skills, so there are several classes offered through
classes either in a traditional building or an online setting. A nursing assistant needs to keep current on all the procedures for their job in order to help all the patients under their care.
There are certain things a nursing assistant can and can’t do. They can take a patient’s blood pressure, temperature and pulse; however they are not licensed to give medications. Only registered nurses or RNs are able to distribute medications to patients. There have been several states in which laws are pending and some that have passed a medical technician law which allows a medical technician to dispense medications. This is different than a nursing assistant and requires little or no schooling. To many who have gone to CNA schooling, this is an insult.
